World CupSpain 1-1 Portugal

Spain 1-1 Portugal

After a 1-1 draw between Spain and Portugal, the points are shared. Morata gave the hosts the lead in the first half, slotting in after a quick break.

Portugal pushed for an equaliser in the second half and eventually got one in the 82nd minute through the substitute Horta, who was right to volley Cancelo’s cross over Simon.

Alba had a glorious chance to win it for Spain late as Costa pushed the ball right to him.

But the defender thumped his header just wide.

Starting lineup:

SPAIN STARTING XI (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Cesar Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Pau Torres, Jordi Alba; Carlos Soler, Sergio Busquets, Pablo Gaviria; Ferran Torres, Alvaro Morata, Pablo Sarabia.

SPAIN SUBS: Raul de Tomas, Koke, Marcos Alonso, Robert Sanchez, Inigo Martinez, Marco Asensio, Ansu Fati, Dani Olmo, Marcos Llorente, Rodrigo, Dani Carvajal, David Raya.

PORTUGAL STARTING XI (4-3-3): Diogo Costa; Joao Cancelo, Pepe, Danilo Pereira, Raphael Guerreiro; Bruno Fernandes, Joao Moutinho, Otavio; Rafael Leao, Andre Silva, Bernardo Silva.

Goals:

MORATA SCORES! After that last Portugal attack, Spain breaks quickly, with Gavi starting the move with a surging run down the right. He switches it out to Sarabia on the opposite side and squares it across the box. None of the defenders spots Morata, and he coolly slots it home. 1-0 Spain!

HORTA EQUALISES! Cancelo plays a clever one-two with Nunes down the right, and his burst of pace catches Spain’s defence out. He plays an early cross into the box, and Horta is unmarked in the middle to volley it over the diving Simon and into the back of the net. 1-1!

So, what’s next?

The Czech Republic beat Switzerland in the other Group A2 game, which means that Portugal sits second and Spain is third after the first round of matches.

Meanwhile, Spain travels to the Czech Republic for their next game, while Portugal hosts Switzerland.
