Lionel Messi dedicated Copa America trophy to Diego Maradona and Argentine nationals

Argentina won the Copa America title after 28 years by defeating Brazil in the final. In the title match, Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 in the decisive match of the Cup. This is Lionel Messi’s first major trophy with his national team Argentina after five major finals. Messi dedicated this Copa America victory to the Argentine nationals and the great late player Diego Maradona.

Messi took over his official Instagram handle to write: “It was an incredible Copa America. We know that we can still improve a lot of things, but the truth is that the guys gave it everything and I can’t be more proud to have the luck of being captain of this spectacular group.

“I want to dedicate this success to my family, who always gave me the strength to move forward, to my friends that I love so much, to all the people who believe in us, and most of all to the 45 million Argentines who have endured such a tough time with this virus …, especially those that have been personally affected.

“This is for all, and of course also for Diego, who surely was supporting us from wherever he is. In order to continue celebrating we have to continue taking care of ourselves. Let’s not forget that there is still a long way to go to return to normality and I hope we can take advantage of this happiness to gain a little strength to fight the virus together.”

For Leo, this win is special in many ways. This can be gauged from the fact that he retired from international football at the age of just 29. But then he returned on the persuasion of the President of Argentina. Worked on the team for five years and was successful in winning the Copa America title for the team in the sixth attempt.

Messi is the player to have played the most six Copa America tournaments. He has played 34 matches in the South American football tournament – Copa America so far. He has equaled Chile’s Sergio Livingstone’s record of playing 34 matches in this tournament. The Barcelona striker has scored 13 goals in this tournament. In this case he is at number four. Messi also holds the record for most assists in the tournament.

Argentina last won the Copa America trophy in 1993 by defeating Mexico. Since then the team has reached the title match four times (3 Copa America, 1 World Cup) and was defeated every time. Argentina suffered a 3–0 defeat at the hands of Brazil in the final of the 2007 Copa America.
