PSG bounces back from their defeat to Monaco in style, as they score five past Lorient in their first game back after the international break.
Mbappe was the star of the show, but Neymar’s two goals also helped them on their way.
The Brazilian opened the scoring, while Pochettino’s side was 2-0 up at the break, thanks to Mbappe’s powerful drive.
Lorient managed to pull a goal back after an improved performance at the start of the second half.
But Moffi’s strike was nothing but a consolation after further goals from Mbappe, Messi and Neymar.
PSG’s world-class front three ran the show in the end, and they deserved all three points.
PSG (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma;
Achraf Hakimi, Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes;
Danilo Pereira, Leandro Paredes, Idrissa Gueye;
Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar.
LORIENT (4-3-3): Matthieu Dreyer;
Houboulang Mendes, Julien Laporte, Leo Petrot, Vincent Le Goff;
Enzo Le Fee, Laurent Abergel, Thomas Monconduit;
Terem Moffi, Ibrahima Kone, Dango Ouattara.
1-0. Simply brilliant from PSG’s front three as Messi, Mbappe, and Neymar combine to devastating effect. All three of them were practically stood together when Messi received the ball, but his delicate flick found Mbappe. Next, the former Monaco man played in Neymar, who took his time before firing past Dreyer. Outstanding.
2-0. Mbappe caps a fine first half-hour with a goal as he sends Dreyer the wrong way from inside the penalty area. The PSG striker received the ball from Gueye, and before Lorient could slide across the box, Mbappe dribbled his way into space before firing his shot into the bottom-left corner.
2-1. Moffi pounces on a shocking pass from Hakimi, and PSG only has themselves to blame. The PSG right-back put Marquinhos under pressure after a lazy pass across the box, and Moffi got to the ball first before prodding home past Donnarumma.
3-1. He has done it again. Mbappe restores PSG’s two-goal cushion while Hakimi makes amends. The PSG right-back won the ball high up the pitch before squaring his pass to Mbappe. The young striker did the rest as he waited for Lorient’s defence to pressurise him before then firing his shot into the bottom-left corner as Dreyer stood still.
4-1. Messi grabs his first goal of the night, but he wastes no time and rushes to thank Mbappe, who now has two goals and two assists inside the first 75 minutes. When PSG’s latest attack looked to be coming to nothing, Mbappe raced into the box and kept the play alive before cutting his cross into Messi’s path. The former Barcelona ace took a touch before smashing the ball off the crossbar.
5-1. Never in doubt, was it? Neymar grabs his second of the evening, and despite a slow start to the second half, PSG has run riot on home soil. Mbappe…who else? He was the man that grabbed the assist as he slotted his pass into the channel, allowing Neymar to race towards the goal. He showed tremendous composure, and PSG got their fifth goal at the death!
So, what’s next?
PSG are now 12 points clear at the top of the table, and Pochettino’s men will get the chance to push on when they travel to Clermont next weekend, while Lorient will face Saint-Etienne on home soil.
