Tomiyasu turned down Tottenham offer for Arsenal

Takehiro Tomiyasu, right-back for Arsenal, has disclosed the fact that he has turned down the offer to join Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day after the Gunners came in for him. Throughout the summer the Japan international had been suspected to join Spurs but his deal, which was thought to be almost done by the middle of the transfer season, never materialized.

As a result, Tomiyasu went to Arsenal instead, while Tottenham went after Emerson Royal. Since joining the Emirates football club Tomiyasu has immediately established himself as a fan favourite. In an interview with DAZN Japan he told that he has no regrets about joining the red side of north London.

“I thought I wasn’t able to join Arsenal,” he said. “I thought I was going to Spurs. On deadline day, I rejected them. Arsenal asked me to join them and I did immediately.”

When questioned about his season aims, Tomiyasu stated unequivocally that he wants to return the Gunners to the top of the English football pyramid. I’m just embracing the challenge.”

He continued, “If we could go back in time to when Arsenal was at the top, the Emirates will be the best place in the world. That would be the dream for me. Italy has a lot of tactical practice and there were days when I didn’t give 100% in training. That suddenly made me go 100% in matches, which could have led to injuries. At Arsenal, most of the training days require 100%.”

“That’s how it should be. I do sprint measurements and training when I’m in the gym to make sure I am at 100%,” he added. Tomiyasu has started every Premier League game for the Gunners since joining Arsenal on deadline day for £20 million from Bologna, winning five and drawing two of his seven appearances.
