Leicester City played against Manchester City on August 7 and won the Community Shield trophy. Leicester had last won the title in 1971. The match ended on a 1-0 score holding a point from Brendan Rodgers’ team which was later announced as winners.
Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal of the match and as a result, Leicester won the Community Shield. Jack Grealish made his Manchester City debut from the bench. Just two days after becoming the most expensive British player after joining City from Aston Villa for £100 million, Grealish was named among the City substitutes at Wembley. The England attacker entered the fray after 65 minutes but was unable to help City break the deadlock.
50 years to the day after they won their first former City striker Iheanacho scored a penalty two minutes from time, sealing a 1-0 victory. City coach Guardiola named an unfamiliar side and gave teenagers Sam Edozie and Cole Palmer a big chance to impress with many established stars out due to injury or late returns from summer activities, and Grealish waiting in the wings.
Barnes had a low shot tipped wide by stand-in City keeper Zack Steffen before Leicester came even closer to opening the scoring in the 24th minute. Barnes’ shot was deflected into the path of Jamie Vardy, whose first-time effort struck Steffen at point-blank range and sailed clear.
The 18-year-old winger Edozie squandered a big chance after being played in by Gundogan, only to shank his shot wide. With Guardiola on the touchline, Joao Cancelo dragged a shot across goal and Gundogan curled over before Vardy had the first half’s best chance in stoppage time.
Riyad Mahrez lifted a free-kick over after halftime and Gundogan drove too high as City took control of the game. When Leicester lost possession at a corner, they should have taken the lead, but Mahrez ran the length of their half, only to slice wide. Leicester’s win came after Nathan Ake clumsily brought down Iheanacho in the area, with the striker beating Steffen to send Leicester fans wild.
