Australian Jarred Gillett will become the first overseas referee to feature in a Premier League game later this week when he takes charge of Watford vs Newcastle on September 25 at Vicarage Road. This latest football news has been confirmed by the Premier League.
Gillett was born on the Gold Coast and before relocating to England in 2019 he was a top referee in Australian soccer for nearly a decade. He has been named a referee of the year five times in nine seasons since making his A-League debut in 2010, and has officiated at five A-League “Grand Finals.” In total, he was in charge of 154 football matches.
Gillett was promoted to a select group of referees by the Professional Game Match Officers Limited (PGMOL) prior to the start of the current season. Gillette has already been a regular VAR referee in the Premier League for the past two seasons. He moved to England in the 2019-20 season to referee in the English Football League after officiating for nine seasons in the A-League in his country.
He has officiated in the Chinese Super League, Saudi Professional League, and Indian Super League, in addition to Australia. Until he left the A-League in 2019 when he accepted a post-doctoral research position at Liverpool John Moore’s University, Gillett was a FIFA-listed international referee for Australia.
Just a few weeks after arriving in England, Gillett was hired as a fourth official for a Liverpool legends exhibition match at Anfield. Three weeks later, he was appointed as an EFL referee, presiding over a League Two match between Morecambe and Cheltenham in April 2019. Gillett was chosen at the end of that season to referee Blackburn against Swansea in the Championship, and by the end of the 2020/21 season, he had officiated in 64 EFL games.
