Angel Blessed Atletico Madrid with three points.
Atletico Madrid 2- 0 Rayo Vallecano (Angel Correa 28′,53′)
After getting no wins in La Liga in the month of December, Atletico Madrid was quick to respond in their first game of the year.
The first Goal came when Carrasco surges down the right and does extremely well to keep the ball in play with an outrageous little flick on the byline. He pulls it back for Hermoso, whose effort is blocked, but the ball ricochets back to Correa who slams it in the net from a tight angle!
It’s a sumptuous flowing move by the hosts, and a deserved second goal. Lemar drives forwards and feeds Lodi out on the overlap. He delivers a beautiful low cross, leaving Correa with a simple finish into an empty net. 2-0 lead for the host.
In the absence of Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix, who both missed Atletico’s first game of 2022 owing to positive COVID-19 tests, Correa, playing out of position as a pure striker, guided Atletico to a victory that they dominated from start to finish.
Due to the pandemic, Atletico also missed Marcos Llorente and Captain Koke, the Argentinian coach decided to change his system from three defenders to a classic 4-4-2.
Angel Correa’s Post Match Reaction:
“After four consecutive losses, we needed this win, It’s a great way to start the year because we won playing well, dominating; we are really happy with the attitude and the result.”
Simeone’s Post Match Reaction:
“It was tremendously important [to get the win]. The players showed it with how they approached the game, from the first minute to the last, with a lot of heart. We know that results are the reality but in the four previous games we’d done important things well too, and the mistakes had hurt us more than we deserved,”
