England 0-4 Hungary

World Cup 2022

England 0-4 Hungary

England 0-4 Hungary

Concluding a miserable month for England, the Euro 2020 finalists slip to a humbling home defeat against ruthless Hungary, who scored four times from six attempts on goal to complete a memorable victory.

Echoing the infamous events of 1963, though, in a very different context, the Magyars slew their more fancied hosts courtesy of some clinical finishing.

And they sit top of Group A3 heading into the final two games, to be played in September.

For the tame Three Lions, they will hope to reset over the brief break and get back on track for the upcoming World Cup.

Starting lineup:

ENGLAND (4-3-3): Aaron Ramsdale; Kyle Walker, John Stones, Marc Guehi, Reece James; Conor Gallagher, Kalvin Phillips, Jude Bellingham; Jarrod Bowen, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka.

HUNGARY (3-4-2-1): Denes Dibusz; Willi Orban, Adam Lang, Attila Szalai; Attila Fiola, Andras Schafer, Callum Styles, Zsolt Nagy; Roland Sallai, Dominik Szoboszlai; Adam Szalai.

Goals:

HUNGARY LEAD! With their first shot at goal, the away side goes in front! After Stones fails to clear the cross from a Hungary free-kick away from danger, Sallai sneaks in behind Phillips and volleys home past Ramsdale at close range: 1-0!

SALLAI STRIKES AGAIN! Hungary go 2-0 up! Phillips missed the ball, conceded possession just inside his half and substitutes Adam’s pounces to thread an intelligent ball across the box for Sallai. The forward finishes beneath Ramsdale with a low, outside-of-the-foot shot, and Hungary is in touching distance of the win!

HUNGARY LEAD 3-0! A chorus of boos breaks the stunned silence at Molineux as Zsolt Nagy puts Hungary three goals ahead! After a counter-attack by the visitors, Nego has a header blocked at close range before Adam rolls the ball back into his teammate’s path. Nagy then fires home with an unerring strike into the bottom-left corner!

HUNGARY HAVE FOUR! England’s disintegration is complete as Gazdag steals through on the break to dink the ball over Ramsdale from 10 yards, shrugging off pressure from the back-tracking Walker. Adam Nagy laid on the Magyars’ fourth goal with a lovely through ball: incredibly, it’s 4-0 to Hungary!

So, what’s next?

England has just two points from four Nations League matches so far and is still stuck to the bottom of the group, so relegation to League B is a particular threat when they reconvene in three months.

Hungary, meanwhile, is the new leader after Germany beat Italy 5-1.

The Magyars will play the latter pair again in September when they could seal passage to the Nations League finals.
