Tribute to Black Lives Matter and COVID-19 deaths at Premier League restart

A minute’s silence will be held to remember those who died with Covid-19, before each match in the first round of the restarted Premier League.

Paying tribute to NHS staff heart-shaped badges would be embroidered into a team kit and on Thursday’s top-flight club meeting various support initiatives for the Black Lives Matter movement were also decided.

The league will have no problem if players or teams want to knee ahead of games, as some clubs have done before recent games, claims The Guardian. For at least the first set of games, the names on the back of players’ shirts will be replaced by the words Black Lives Matter, following an initiative driven this week by club captains.

One club clarified that they had trained their kit workers to order shirts that represented the move.

Black Lives Matter badges, along with their NHS equivalents, are also likely to be displayed on shirts, although their exact placement is yet to be finalized.
