Barcelona boss Quique Setien says he’d be “delighted” if the Brazilian returns from Paris Saint-Germain to the club and he’d love to coach Neymar.
In 2017 Neymar joined PSG for a world-record fee of $264 million. Previous year Barca tried to re-sign Neymar but failed to reach the contract.
This summer an agreement may be even harder to strike this summer in view of the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, though Barcelona could offer players in exchange.
“I ‘d love to be able to coach him someday,” Setien said, speaking in late Friday to beIN Sport. “We are talking about a level of exception. Luckily I’ve already fulfilled one of my dreams of coaching [Lionel] Messi, but I’d be delighted if Neymar came in.”
In Barcelona Neymar had already created a victorious attacking trio with Luis Suarez and Messi but the future of Suarez is uncertain.
In January the 33-year-old underwent surgery on an injury to his right knee since then he hasn’t played, with La Liga receiving the green light on Saturday from the Spanish government to begin on June 8, Setien requested for more time to get back into full fitness.
Asked if Suarez was perfectly fit, Setien said: “No, I think he’s in a good condition and working with the group. But we see he lacks a little bit of confidence.”
“He’s undergoing an operation and I would say he’s still recovering after two months. But it’s obvious that soon [he’ll be ready], I don’t know if it’s going to be two, three, or four weeks.”
Two points ahead of Real Madrid, Barcelona is sitting at the top of the table as La Liga is preparing for their return.
The preferred date for the resumption of the season is June 12, said the president of La Liga Javier Tebas, which looks increasingly likely following the announcement by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday.
