French Ligue 1Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 Brest

Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 Brest

Requiring more resilience than inspiration, Paris Saint-Germain return to the top of Ligue 1 with an ultimately close-run victory over struggling opponents.

Perhaps suffering the effects of a Champions League hangover, the hosts were fitfully creative in the opening hour.

Yet, it took a Donnarumma penalty save to secure maximum points as they ran out of steam towards the end.

Brest deserves great credit for their endeavour throughout.

But will regret they couldn’t seize their chance to cause an upset.

Starting lineup:

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN (3-4-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Sergio Ramos, Danilo Pereira, Presnel Kimpembe; Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, Marco Verratti, Juan Bernat; Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar.

SUBS: Keylor Navas, Nordi Mukiele, Fabian Ruiz, Carlos Soler, Nuno Mendes, Hugo Ekitike, Warren Zaire-Emery, Pablo Sarabia, Marquinhos.

BREST (5-3-2): Marco Bizot; Noah Fadiga, Jean-Kevin Duverne, Christophe Herelle, Brendan Chardonnet, Lilian Brassier; Haris Belkebla, Pierre Lees-Melou, Mahdi Camara; Islam Slimani, Franck Honorat.

SUBS: Joaquin Blazquez, Hugo Magnetti, Tairyk Arconte, Achraf Dari, Mathias Pereira Lage, Irvin Cardona, Youcef Belaili, Jere Uronen, Karamoko Dembele.

PARIS LEAD! Two of the illustrious front three combine again; putting PSG in front on the half-hour mark! Neymar receives a precise lofted pass from Messi with a feather-like touch, then fires the ball ruthlessly into the bottom-right corner of Bizot’s goal. It’s 1-0 to the hosts.

What does it mean? PSG is back at the summit after denying Brest again

As well as moving back to the Ligue 1 summit, PSG maintained their acceptable record against Brest by winning a scrappy encounter.

The Parisians have now beaten Brest 18 times in Ligue 1.

The most defeat the visitors have suffered against a single side in the French top-flight.

Meanwhile, the leaders have beaten Brest in each of the duo’s last 10 league meetings, only boasting a better such streak against Angers (12 straight wins) among current Ligue 1 teams.

So, what’s next?

While Paris will at least be tied at the top on points after Ligue 1’s seventh round.

And next travel to Israel, where they meet Maccabi Haifa.

17th-placed Brest must wait eight days to tackle Ajaccio in their next top-flight fixture.
