‘One-trick pony’ – Paul Scholes verdict

Paul Scholes, a club icon, has referred to Manchester United’s £85 million ($95 million) summer acquisition of Antony as a “one-trick pony.”

The Premier League powerhouses snatched up the Brazil international on transfer deadline day as Erik ten Hag added another player he is familiar with from his time at Ajax. Although Antony scored on his Old Trafford debut against Arsenal and again in a Manchester City derby, Scholes has claimed that the 22-year-old does not contribute enough to the team’s overall goals.

Jadon Sancho, another player who the former United midfielder felt was failing the team, was mentioned in his rant to BT Sport: “Sancho never really runs in behind. He needs a quick left-back or a center-forward to connect up with, and he currently lacks both. Antony doesn’t come in from behind on the other side either. He appears to have a limited skill set. He frequently makes inside cuts before shooting or passing back to the full-back. You believe he needs a little more growth. He is still a young man, as we are aware.

The United manager is integrating Martial gradually into the squad because he is still concerned about the Frenchman’s ongoing injury problems. In two straight games, Martial has scored for his club after coming off the bench.

He had two goals against Manchester City over the weekend, and on Thursday, against Omonia, United won the Europa League for the second time thanks to his goal.

Sancho and Antony started the game against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League for United, but the former was taken off at halftime, and the latter was replaced by Fred in the 74th.

When United return to Premier League play on Sunday with a trip to Everton, they will be hopeful that a spark can be rekindled. With two wide attackers seeing questions about their participation.
