Tottenham ahead of Manchester United in a race to sign Sergio Reguilón

Tottenham is expected to sign the Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilón for €30 m (£27.6 m) after Manchester United declined to consider the insistence of the La Liga club on a buyback option.

The defender, who has one cap for Spain and spent the last season on loan in Seville, was keen to play football in the Champions League with United this season, but the player’s representatives stepped up talks with Tottenham as soon as United explained their role on the buyback clause.

Spurs reached personal terms with the 23-year-old on a deal until June 2025 and although the actual amount would depend on the bonus add-ons included in the agreement, the club approved a buy-back option of approximately € 45 million. Real have also requested a clause to allow them to match any Tottenham offer received for the player.According to The Guardian, the Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, was keen on Reguilón competing at the left-back with Luke Shaw but his club, as well as not agreeing to the buyback clause, were unable to pay € 30 m in advance; they wanted a contract for €20 m plus add-ons.
