In the Premier League in an enthralling game at Villa Park, Leeds eventually ended Aston Villa’s 100 percent winning streak as Patrick Bamford shot a fine hat-trick.
The 27-year-old missed two gold-edged chances in the first quarter, but made amends with a red-hot second-half result, placing Villa with a remarkable treble to the sword.
Leeds belonged to the first 20 minutes, who was expected to be leading in the fifth minute, but Bamford led his head painfully wide from the cross of Ezgjan Alioski.
Aston Villa developed into the game, powered by Jack Grealish, and only a desperate goal-line clearance from Luke Ayling denied his third goal of the season to the England international to hold the scores even.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side was extremely dangerous on the brak and a quick counter-attack nearly has undone Villa just before half time as Bamford was found by Jack Harrison’s cross, who again could have done better with the finish as he stabbed off-target his shot.
But opening the scoring 10 minutes after the restart with a quick tap in after Rodrigo’s shot was spilled by Emiliano Martinez, Bamford would have the final laugh.
Bamford added his second 11 minutes later with the elegance of a strike, leaving Martinez no hope-but he wasn’t done there.
Leeds continuously outnumbered the hosts in the wide regions, and their talisman snatched his hat-trick with a lovely curled finish, as the flawless record of Dean Smith had finished in style.
Victory pushes Bielsa’s men to third with 10 points in the league-above Liverpool’s reigning champions-but Villa stays second with 12.
Aston Villa – Leeds United 0-3
