Al Wahda ended Persepolis’ four-match unbeaten innings with a 1–0 AFC Asian Champions League win, which raised their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages as Group E winners. A five-minute strike by Slovenia striker Tim Matvz proved decisive in the match at Margao, Goa, and led at Club Sirati. 10 points from five matches, two behind Iranian stalwart Persepolis. The result means that both teams must win the sixth and final match of the group stage to ensure qualification in a format in which only five winners of the group and the best three teams in second place are in eighth place.
Abu Dhabi’s Al Wahda was defeated 1-0 by Persepolis in the first week of the tournament, but the Iranians were caught sleeping early in the match on Monday, while Matawaz entered the penalty area with a strong shot at the net winning the goal.
Persepolis had a hard time keeping an eye on Al Wahda’s goal in the first half and left the second almost the same evening, but goalkeeper Hamed Luck scored one after Omar Kharibin scored with a bold shot from inside his own net which was a good save.
The Iranians had a few chances in the second half, but Hossein Kanani advanced to the side and the wrestler saw his shot on the crossbar. With the results, Perspolis is standing on top of the table while Al Wahda is two points behind the lead.
Al Wahda will play FC Goa on Thursday, 29th April at Fatorda Stadium. The match is scheduled to kick off at 10:30 pm. Persepolis will take on Al Rayyan from Qatar to decide the winners of the group. Persepolis vs Al Rayyan match will also take place on the same day at 8 pm at Fatorda Stadium.
