Italy Serie AMilan 2-0 Atalanta

Milan 2-0 Atalanta

Milan came out of the halftime break with a different team and a critical win.

They defeated Atalanta 2-0 to earn their seventh consecutive home clean sheet.

The weight of the Scudetto competition was heavily on Pioli’s shoulders as his team began the game hesitantly.

After a tense first 45 minutes with few chances, the Rossoneri sprang into life with goals from Leao and Hernandez.

The second was a magnificent individual performance in which the full-back ran three-quarters of the pitch, defeating five defenders.

After the entrances of Zapata and Boga, Atalanta looked more lively, but it was too little, too late for Gasperini’s side, who Maignan defeated.

Milan now leads Inter by five points with one game remaining, while Atalanta stays in seventh place.

Starting lineup:

MILAN XI (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan; Theo Hernandez, Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu, Davide Calabria; Franck Kessie, Sandro Tonali; Rafael Leao, Rade Krunic, Alexis Saelemaekers; Olivier Giroud.

ATALANTA XI (3-4-2-1): Juan Musso; Marten De Roon, Jose Palomino, Berat Djimsiti; Hans Hateboer, Teun Koopmeiners, Remo Freuler, Davide Zappacosta; Matteo Pessina, Mario Pasalic; Luis Muriel.

MILAN FIND THE BREAKTHROUGH! 1-0! Pessina loses possession of the ball to Kalulu on the edge of Milan’s penalty area, sparking a furious Rossoneri counter-attack. It’s lobbed over the top of the defence by Messias for Leao, who beats his man for pace before tucking the ball in between the legs of Musso!

A SUBLIME GOAL FROM HERNANDEZ GIVES MILAN THE INSURANCE THEY NEEDED! 2-0! It’s an outstanding solo effort from Hernandez. This simply breathtaking run saw him drive from well inside his penalty area, slaloming through the midfield before taking it wide inside the opposition’s penalty area to work an angle for a shot. Musso comes off his line to try and block the full-back, but it’s too late as the France international coolly tucks a shot into the far corner.

So, what’s next?

Milan finishes their season at Sassuolo next Sunday, while Atalanta hosts Empoli to close the campaign.
