Semi Khedira, who was part of the Germany football team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2014, has announced his retirement from football. Midfielder Khedira, who played for Hertha Berlin in the German league Bundesliga, said Saturday’s match in Bundesliga would be his last match. Khedira told the press conference, “This is a time when I realize that I am no longer able to play anymore. The pain is huge. It’s a difficult step, but right. In my professional football career of 15 years, I have made many memorable impressions.”
According to the DPA report, Khedira was part of the team that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. He scored a goal in the score of 7–1 in the semi-final match played against hosts Brazil. The 34-year-old has a record of playing 77 international matches for Germany.
Midfielder Khedira confirmed his retirement via an Instagram post stating Hertha’s season finale against Hoffenheim will be his last match. “Time to say goodbye. It’s never easy to make life-changing decisions. But sometimes you have to. On Saturday I will play my last game in my career! It was an honor for me to play for some of the biggest clubs out there, to win remarkable titles, and to be part of a historic moment when we held the world cup trophy in our hands back in 2014! Thanks to all the fans, supporters, teammates, coaches, and of course my family and friends. You‘ve always been there for me alongside this journey that comes to an end now. We‘ll see each other again! Yours, Sami.”
Hertha coach Pál Dárdai praised Khedira’s off-the-field impact, “He couldn’t help much from a sporting point of view, but from taking care of matters in the changing room, it wasn’t just his name that was world class. It was a great help”.
Khedira has had a brilliant career at the club level as well. He was a key part of the Real Madrid team that won the Champions League title in 2014. In addition, he has won Serie A titles five times with Italian club Juventus. He has also been a member of the team that won the German League Bundesliga title in 2007 with Stuttgart.
Khedira has been playing for Hertha Berlin since January and their match against Hoffenheim on Saturday will be their last.
