West Ham win over Everton with a spectacular leap

Angelo Ogbonna’s looping header just over 15 minutes from time helped West Ham win over Everton at Goodison Park. West Ham always seemed to have a little more in the tank, and they were rewarded for their bravery when Ogbonna rose highest to glance home Jarrod Bowen’s brilliant in-swinging corner. The first half of the football match was rather quiet, while the Hammers had the most of possession and appeared to be the team most likely to score.

West Ham could, and perhaps should, have taken the lead when Bowen had enough of time to send a low shot past Jordan Pickford. However, he was unable to beat England’s number one goalkeeper from close range, and Tomas Soucek’s ensuing rebound – which did find the back of the net – was ruled out for blatant offside.

Pablo Fornals should have done better for the Hammers when well situated on the outside of the box, but Alex Iwobi’s mistake – and Everton’s only meaningful chance – was the most blatant miss of the half. Demarai Gray had done well to beat Ogbonna and square from the byline, but the 25-year-old somehow missed his kick from six yards out.

After the interval Everton was a little quicker out of the blocks, but the Toffees lacked any form of cutting edge due to the continued absence of both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. Lukasz Fabianski had very little to do with West Ham’s goal, instead of watching from the opposite end of the field as Ogbonna rose above Ben Godfrey to leave Pickford clutching for air, scoring the game’s only goal.
