UEFA is moving on with plans to host the European Championships (EURO) while FIFA hopes to host the World Cup in 2028. UEFA has laid out preparations for Euro 2028 despite continuous speculation of the World Cup being shifted to the same year as part of disputed plans, claim Sky Sports football news.
FIFA’s head of global development, Arsene Wenger is lobbying for a reorganization of the international football calendar, with the global championship held every other year. UEFA, the governing body of European football, has vehemently rejected the plan, which would see the country’s own showpiece international event held in ‘odd’ years starting in 2025.
If the plans are approved the first of FIFA’s biennial World Cups would be contested in 2028. On the other hand, UEFA expects the European Championship finals to be placed in seven years, as planned, with the bidding procedure to be announced on Tuesday.
By March 20, 2020, countries that are interested to host the football tournament must submit their entries, with the winning bid announced in September 2023. UEFA will accept solo or combined bids for the competition, which will once again include 24 teams. Germany will be the sole host of the 2024 competition after defeating Turkey in the voting process.
