Tottenham Hotspur has signed defender Cristian Romero from Atalanta for a reported fee of £47 million. Spurs have allegedly strengthened their defence by signing Argentina international Cristian Romero. “We are delighted to announce the signing of Cristian Romero from Atalanta. Cristian will wear the number four shirt,” the club confirmed on the official website.
The Argentina international has reportedly signed a five-year contract with the north London club. After trailing only Tanguy Ndombele’s £53.8 million move from Lyon in 2019, Romero is also the club’s second-most expensive signing. Under the new coach Nuno Espirito Santo the 23-year-old is Tottenham’s third signing, following the arrival of Sevilla winger Bryan Gil and the loan signing of Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, with whom Romero played in 2020-21.
Following the departures of Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth earlier in the transfer window, his arrival provides a much-needed boost to Tottenham’s backline. With his performances helping Atalanta to a third-successive third-place league finish, Romero is named as ‘Best Defender’ in Serie A last season.
A statement published by Juve on Friday confirmed that Atalanta “exercised the option rights for the definitive acquisition of the registration rights of the player Cristian Romero for a consideration of €16 million, to be paid in three financial years.”
Romero joined the Serie A club on a two-year loan from Juventus last September and was named Defender of the Year as Atalanta finished third. At Atalanta, making 42 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals he impressed in the heart of defence.
On Thursday, Romero arrived in England to complete his medical and is free from isolating because he is vaccinated, provided he returns a negative test on Saturday.
