These teams will participate in Hero I-League

The 15th edition of Hero I-League is scheduled to start on December 26th of 2021. Kolkata will be the host of this men’s professional football league. This Indian football tournament will be held at three venues in and around Kolkata, namely Mohun Bagan Ground, Kalyani Stadium, and Naihati Stadium in Kolkata. This season’s Hero I-League 13 teams will welcome three new groups – Andhra Pradesh’s Sreenidhi Deccan FC, Rajasthan United FC, and Kolhapur’s Kenkre FC.

What is I-League?

The I-League is a men’s professional football league, which is one of two co-existing highest level leagues in the Indian football system, along with the Indian Super League. It is currently contested by 13 football clubs across the country. The competition was founded in 2007 as the successor to the National Football League (NFL), with the first season starting in November 2007. The league was launched as India’s first ever professional football league with the aim to increase the player pool for the Indian national team

Format of I-League

As per the format of the tournament, in the first leg all the teams will play once against each other in a round robin format. After this, in the second phase of the league, they will be divided into two groups. The top seven teams will qualify for Group A while the bottom six teams will qualify for Group B. Teams from each group will play one match against each other in a round robin format. Teams in Group A will fight for the title while Group B will fight to avoid slipping into the lower leagues.
