Swiss prosecutors charged Blatter and Platini of fraud

Former FIFA presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini have been charged by Swiss prosecutors with fraud following a six-year probe into a mysterious payment of 2 million Swiss francs (about £1.35 million) in the latest football news. The action against the two originates from Platini’s request in 2011 for backdated income for his stint as Blatter’s adviser between 1998 and 2002, with Blatter quickly ordering FIFA to pay the $2 million.

Blatter and Platini agreed on a 300,000 franc annual remuneration for the work, which FIFA paid in full, stating there was no rationale for the 2 million franc payment over eight years after the work concluded, according to a statement from the Swiss Attorney General’s Office

Blatter has been accused of forgery of a document, fraud, mismanagement, and misappropriation of FIFA money. On the other hand, Platini is accused of fraud, misappropriation, forgery, and being a collaborator to Blatter’s alleged mismanagement. The Frenchman was not initially under investigation but became involved last year, prompting the fraud allegations.

In 2015 the police probe began when officers raided FIFA’s Zurich offices on the same day that Blatter and Platini attended a meeting of FIFA’s executive committee. The investigation first focused on Blatter, but proof of Platini’s involvement was later discovered, and a case of fraud was formed.

To pay Platini for his support and abilities to sway European voters in preparation for a re-election campaign against Qatar’s Mohamed bin Hammam, Blatter allegedly used FIFA funds and for years, both have denied any wrongdoing. Both Blatter and Platini have claimed that they struck a verbal arrangement for the 2 million to be paid over 20 years ago, but no proof of this has ever been uncovered.
