Sunil Chhetri double strike against Bangladesh ends India’s winless streak

The Indian football team has tasted victory after recovering from the defeat against Qatar. Star striker Sunil Chhetri’s brilliant game helped India register their first win of the tournament by beating Bangladesh 2-0 in the football match of combined qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023 on Monday. With this win, the Indian team’s hopes of qualifying directly for the third round of the Asian Qualifiers have increased.

India got its first win in this tournament away from home after 20 years. Apart from this, the Indian team has registered its first win in the tournament in six years. The team missed a few scoring opportunities in the beginning but, in the 79th minute, Chhetri’s header opened its account. The Indian captain ensured a 2-0 win for the team in the last minute (90+2 minutes) with the help of Suresh Singh scoring another goal.

These two goals took Chhetri’s international goals tally to 74 and he surpassed Argentina football player Lionel Messi (72 goals) for the country’s most goalscorer. With these football results, the Indian team has seven points from six matches and has moved to third place in the group table. The top three places in the group table will qualify directly for the third round of the Asian Cup Qualifiers. Apart from this win, the team’s account includes three losses and three draws. India now has to play its last league match against Afghanistan on 15 June.

The Indian team has been out of the race for the FIFA World Cup 2022 but, the team remains in the race to secure a place in the Asian Cup to be played in China in 2023. The top three places in the group table will qualify directly for the third round of the Asian Cup Qualifiers.
