Nuno Espirito Santo made a stellar start at Tottenham Hotspur as a manager in the absence of Harry Kane. However, Son Heung-min’s strike helped Spurs to beat Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday’s Premier League opener football match.
Grealish could have won a penalty kick after being blocked by Oliver Skipp, but Ilkay Gundogan’s free-kick was a few inches away. Fernandinho then scored a goal, Hugo Lloris hit a cross, while Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez cut good chances.
However, inspired by a full home retreat at their home with a capacity of 62,000, the Spurs evolved into the game and soon began to cause immediate defense problems for City. Guardiola dropped England internationals John Stones and Kyle Walker due to a lack of pre-season training, and Tottenham targeted City left-back Nathan Ake and Benjamin Mendy.
Son saw a deflected shot flying some width before the break, a prelude to what was to come in the winning goal. The South Korean was spinning relentlessly for City and scored his seventh goal against them in 55 minutes. Steven Bergwijn had a great opportunity to score after a counterattack after 80 minutes, but City’s shot from the left went over the bar. Guardiola eventually returned to his star from bench to play alongside Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, and Alexander Zinchenko.
De Bruyne brought much-needed momentum to City’s approach game and took Lloris out of bounds. But even Belgium could not pick up the sleeping champions in the final stage, as their disappointment grew. Check out football scores of the season’s opening Premiership match where Spurs beat Manchester City.
City has now lost their last three competitive matches after becoming Premier League champions. Apart from this match the club faced Champions League final defeat to Chelsea last season and lost Community Shield to Leicester City last weekend. Guardiola’s men should only become stronger with several internationals and possibly the return of Kane. However, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool have already achieved victories on Saturday.
