Serie A: Napoli beat Salernitana winning the Campania derby

SSC Napoli overcame Salernitana 1-0 at Stadio Arechi in spite of both teams going down to ten men. With this result, as Napoli beat Salernitana they have won ten of their opening 11 Serie A games just for the second time in their history. Salernitana is placed 19th in the Serie A table and was looking to cause a huge upset against leader Napoli who had only dropped two points this whole campaign.

With plenty of tackles during the first half of the football match, it was clear this was a derby game. Neither of the team managed to score, however, leaving the scores level at halftime. Napoli finally got their breakthrough just after an hour mark when Matteo Politano’s header struck the crossbar which the hosts failed to clear the loose ball, leaving Piotr Zielinski in space to sneak in and add his name on the scoreboard.

For the hosts situation went from bad to worse as Grigoris Kastanos was initially booked for a nasty challenge on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa but, after consulting the VAR, the referee upgraded his decision to a red card, leaving Salernitana with ten men with over twenty minutes left to play. Just seven minutes later another red card came, this time it was for Napoli captain Kalidou Koulibaly after an awful tackle on his opponent to deny him a clear goal scoring opportunity.

David Ospina denied the free-kick from Franck Ribery. Salernitana continued to push for an equaliser but despite losing their star defender, and the addition of six stoppage-time minutes, Napoli defended bravely to hold on to their victory.

With 31 points after eleven games, Luciano Spalletti’s men stay on top of the Serie A table, whilst Salernitana remains in the relegation zone with only two victories this season. Watch football highlights of Serie A game as Napoli beat Salernitana.
