Scaloni: Messi will start against Brazil

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni told reporters on Monday that Argentina captain Lionel Messi is back in form and will start the World Cup qualifiers at home against Brazil on Tuesday. Scoloni made similar remarks ahead of Argentina’s last football match, a 1-0 win against Uruguay on Friday, although Messi appeared only in the final 14 minutes of the match.

Argentina is second in the qualifying group with 10 teams from South America, six points behind Brazil, the only team in the region to have secured their place in Qatar 2022 so far. Scaloni reiterated that the 34-year-old Messi is fully recovered from knee and hamstring concerns that have kept him away from Paris Saint-Germain’s last two games and prepare for one of the biggest matches on the South American calendar.

Scaloni said of Tuesday’s match in San Juan, “He was in fitness that day and we finally decided that the best thing was for him to play for a few minutes so that he could feel and confirm that he would play tomorrow.” He further added, “It will be a very difficult game. They are the team that lead the qualification and they have already reached the final.”

The top four teams in the South American qualifiers automatically advance to the following year’s World Cup final, and the fifth-placed team enters an interregional playoff. Argentina is undefeated in 26 matches, a series which includes a 1–0 victory over Brazil in the Copa América final in Rio de Janeiro in July.
