SC East Bengal appoints Manolo Diaz, sacks Robbie Fowler

SC East Bengal on Wednesday signed former Real Madrid reserve manager Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz as the new head coach of the club for the upcoming Indian Super League 2021-22 season. Diaz was appointed minutes after Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler was fired as head coach.

The Reds and Golds outfit was managed by Fowler only for one year after he joined the club in 2020. Under former Liverpool striker’s guidance, SCEB was placed 9th in the Indian Super League standings last year. However, after confirming the football transfer of goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya SC East Bengal ended the deal with coach Fowler on mutual consent.

Announcing this on their official Twitter handle, SC East Bengal said, “SC East Bengal can confirm that the club has terminated the contract with Robbie Fowler for the position of Head Coach after mutual consent.” The club also mentioned in their statement, “alongside his assistant, Tony Grant, he took charge of the team in a very challenging period of transition and managed to overcome significant odds to bring the fans some moments of joy in the club’s first-ever season in the Indian Super League.”

Minutes after the club parted ways with Robbie Fowler, the club announced former Real Madrid Castilla coach Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz appointment. The club again confirmed the football news on Twitter, “SC East Bengal is proud to welcome Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz, former coach of Real Madrid Castilla, as the new head coach.”

The Spaniard coached the Real Madrid youth side from 2002 and has since risen to lead Real Madrid C and B teams, with a brief stint with Mexican outfit Navalcarnero and Ponferradina in Spain. He last managed Hercules in the third tier of Spanish football.

“In Madrid, we say ‘winning is in our DNA’. We love the pressure and expectation that comes with coaching a big club. Time is short and there is a long and difficult road ahead, but we will do our best to deliver good performances for all SC East Bengal fans,” the 53-year-old commented on his appointment.
