SAFF U-19 Women's Football Championship: India lost to Bangladesh

India lost to hosts Bangladesh as they suffered a 0-1 (match score) defeat in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Football Championship on Friday. This was the first defeat of the Indian team in the football tournament. India had earlier registered easy wins against Sri Lanka and Bhutan. Shamsunnahar’s goal in the seventh minute on a penalty was the difference between the two teams in the end. Both the teams adopted the strategy of dominating each other from the beginning. Bangladesh got the first chance as a penalty. Shamsunnahar made no mistake in converting it into a goal.

Bangladesh became more aggressive after this goal but India had the best opportunity to equalize in the 40th minute when Sumati Kumar passed Mariyammal but her shot went straight into Bangladesh’s goalkeeper Rupna. In the 50th minute, Shilky Devi was brought down by Maria, who committed a tactical foul to avert the danger for Bangladesh.

India put in full force to come back in the second half and maintained more possession of the ball. Amishal Baxla had an opportunity to score in the 55th minute but could not get past Rupna while Sumati Kumari’s shot went out in the 73rd minute. India will play their next match against Nepal on Sunday in which a win will ensure their place in the final.
