Real Madrid held a goalless draw with Real Betis

In Saturday’s La Liga match Real Madrid was held to a 0-0 draw at home by Real Betis putting them further behind in the title chase.

Defending champions Real Madrid played a goalless draw on Saturday night against Real Betis, leading Atletico Madrid and Barcelona to the title race in the Spanish Football League La Liga. The game did not really get going until the second half, and Madrid could have easily fallen behind, with Guido Rodriguez and Borja Iglesias both squandering great chances.

Playing under the guidance of manager Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid‘s team played a goalless draw for the second time in the last three matches. The draw puts Real Madrid in second place with 71 points from 33 matches. Top-ranked Atletico Madrid have 73 points from 32 matches while Barcelona is third with 68 points from 31 matches.

Zinedine Zidane’s side could have been in the first place if they had defeated Betis. Real Madrid could have surpassed Atletico Madrid due to a stronger head-to-head record. But their failure to get past Claudio Bravo means they could finish the weekend five points behind the leaders. At the same time Valencia played a 1-1 tie with Alaves in the 33rd round of the La Liga. Valencia is in 14th place with 36 points, and Alaves has 31 points and is in 16th place and just two points above the relegation zone.

Madrid will be hoping Athletic Bilbao will do them a favour against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, with the four-way Spanish championship race looking likely to be an exciting conclusion.
