Chelsea secured a 1-1 draw with ten men against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, after defender Reece James was ruled out just before the break. Chelsea took the lead at the front of the football match when Kai Havertz met a corner from James on a near goal, and his header went past the helpless Alisson Becker into the far corner. But in the middle of the break, Liverpool equalized in controversial situations when, after a review by the field monitor, referee Anthony Taylor decided that James had taken care of the line as he made an effort, Sadio Mane was penalized and Chelsea defender removed.
Photos showed the ball hit James’s thigh before jumping into his hand, and when Chelsea felt it hard, Mohamed Salah remained calm amid protests against taking the shot home on the spot. With the team short of 10 men, Thomas Tuchel made two changes at the break with Havertz and the injured N’Golo Kante, making way for defender Thiago Silva and midfielder Matteo Kovacic.
The realignment worked well, with Chelsea securing a point to persevere against a wave of attacks from Liverpool that started the season unbeaten for both teams. Watch football highlights of the Premier League in which Chelsea and Liverpool played a draw.
