Premier League: Aston Villa won against Crystal Palace

Steven Gerrard has won for the second time in a row since taking over from Aston Villa, while the former Rangers boss won a 2-1 football result at Crystal Palace. Revealing weakness in Palace’s game, Villa took the lead after 15 minutes when Matt Targett scored for their first goal in the league in 2019 after the hosts failed to clear Ashley Young’s corner.

Villa’s Douglas Luiz was shown a red card after 72 minutes of the football match for knocking down an opponent and was replaced by Cheikhou Kouyate. John McGuinn added to Palace’s frustration in the 86th minute when he took Villa’s killer from near Anwar El Ghazi. Marc Guehi’s goal in the 95th minute was a minor consolation for Palace.

“Our first-half performance was excellent,” said Gerrard, who replaced Dean Smith as Villa manager earlier this month. “I thought in a lot of departments we were top but we knew we would have to roll our sleeves up in the second half because Patrick would make changes. It was a fantastic away performance and I’m really pleased to have six points from six so far.

“We have Man City to come so we can enjoy tonight but we will go to work as soon as we can tomorrow to prepare the team. We are pleased with the start we have made but there is a lot of work still to do.”
