Police released Aminata Diallo from probe in teammate’s attack

Paris Saint-Germain women’s soccer player Aminata Diallo was released from police custody on Thursday, after two days of trial for the assault of a teammate that rocked the French game. Versailles prosecutor told AFP that Diallo, who was detained on Wednesday morning in connection with an attack on fellow midfielder Kheira Hamraoui last week, was released this afternoon.

During the incident, Hamraoui was pulled from a car and kicked with an iron rod by two masked men according to football news. Diallo was driving Hamraoui home at the time, and police tried to determine if she had anything to do with the violence, which left the victim with stitches on her legs and arms.

A source close to the club told AFP on condition of anonymity: “The longer one is kept in custody, the less positive.” Judicial sources said PSG third player Sakina Karchaoui was called to give police a statement on Thursday morning, while a man was arrested in Lyon City on Wednesday.

PSG on Friday canceled a media event planned by the women’s team fearing that all questions would be related to the incident that shook the Qatar-owned elite club and the women’s league in general.

“It’s something that surprised me,” Lyon’s longtime women’s coach Sonia Bompastor said on Wednesday night after the Champions League match against Bayern Munich. She added, “I am still a little shocked by this incident. Even among men, I have never seen anything like this. It’s obviously negative (for the women’s game).”

Clubs in Europe have poured money into women’s football in recent years, with PSG’s team drawing 16,000 fans in their last match against Real Madrid on Tuesday night. Diallo, who played in that match instead of the injured Hamraoui, is reportedly innocent and no evidence has yet been produced regarding his involvement in an attack on his teammate by police or prosecutors.
