Police investigating racial abuse on England players

The UK police are investigating the online racial abuse of England players including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka following the Euro 2020 final. England trio was subjected to online racial abuse after their national team lost Euro 2020 final to Italy. According to Sky Sports, of the 207 posts on social media identified as criminal, a total of 34 accounts have been identified as being in the UK with 11 arrests made so far.

“There are people who believe they can hide behind a social media profile and get away with posting such comments. They need to think again. We have investigators seeking out abusive comments and, if they meet a criminal threshold, those posting will be arrested. Our investigation is continuing at pace and we are grateful for those who have taken time to report racist posts to us”, – said chief constable Mark Roberts as police investigating racial abuse.

To recap, all three – Sancho, Rashford, and Saka – missed penalties in England’s shoot-out defeat to Italy at Wembley last month. On July 11 the final of the European tournament was held at the Wembley Stadium in London. Italy vs England match ended in a tie and the results were recorded on penalties with the Azzurri winning over the Three Lions on 3-2 penalties.
