Marco Reus praised Haaland as massively crucial

Erling Haaland has hit four doubles in just six Bundesliga football matches this season, on his way to become Germany’s top scorer. With Erling Haaland praised as “massively crucial” to Borussia Dortmund by Marco Reus following his most recent heroics, the Norwegian is putting early-season pressure on Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga goal charts.

Haaland is a rising star, and after returning from a thigh injury layoff the 21-year-old scored twice in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Mainz. In six Bundesliga games this season, Haaland now has nine goals with the double – a penalty and a stoppage-time winner, two more than Lewandowski, the 33-year-old Ballon d’Or contender.

In total, Haaland has scored 49 goals in 49 Bundesliga games for BVB, a remarkable feat that has drew interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City. Marco Reus, who scored Dortmund’s opener against Mainz, said at the press after the game: “We have obviously missed Erling in the past few games. Today, we have seen it again: he is massively important for us because he always occupies two or three players. The fact that he scored two goals on his comeback is fantastic. That’s why we signed him.”

Head coach Marco Rose said, quoted on the club’s website: “We needed him, including for defending set-pieces. He defended well towards the end. And then he went and scored another goal in the 95th minute. That came in handy.” It remains to be seen whether Haaland maintains its lead in the rankings.

Bayern was in action against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, with Lewandowski hoping to put an end to a worryingly long dry spell in which he had gone two Bundesliga games without scoring.
