RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has joined Bayern Munich on a four-year contract. Sabitzer agreed on a football transfer after playing at Leipzig for seven years. The Bundesliga giants Bayern has made another raid on RB Leipzig, signing Sabitzer until 2025. Leipzig filled the vacant place by signing Ilaix Moriba.
Hasan Salihamidzic, sporting director of Bayern Munich, has confirmed on Saturday that the champions are working on a deal for the Austria international, which is expected to cost around €16 million. Sabitzer made a switch although he has less than a year left on his contract and would normally command a much higher fee. The 27-year-old joined Leipzig from Rapid Vienna in 2014.
Sabitzer, himself, was happy to finally see the process come to an end as he said to the club website, “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to play for FC Bayern. As a child my Bayern jersey was my pride and joy – I got a new one at Christmas every year. I’ll give everything for this club, I want to win as many matches as possible and of course collect lots of titles.”
Sabitzer will reunite with former coach Julian Nagelsmann, who joined Bayern Munich from Leipzig at the end of last season, as well as center-back Dayot Upamecano. However, this does not appear to have bothered Nagelsmann.
Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn was ecstatic to acquire such a valuable player at such a paltry fee. “Marcel Sabitzer offers everything that an FC Bayern player needs. On top of that, he won’t need long to settle in as he’s already well-acquainted with the philosophy of our coach Julian Nagelsmann,” Kahn said.
Leipzig appears to be pulling off a coup in bringing in Sabitzer’s replacement, with Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba expected to join. Last season, a technically gifted midfielder, Moriba broke into the Barcelona first team and appeared in 18 games across all competitions. At the age of 18 years and 25 days, he became the youngest player this century to provide an assist on his LaLiga debut on February 13, this year.
