Manchester United match against Brentford postponed

The Premier League match of Manchester United against Brentford on Tuesday night at Old Trafford club has been postponed following a COVID-19 outbreak. The league says the decision was made “after the guidance of health advisors due to the extraordinary circumstances” of the outbreak.

Earlier, United halted operations at their training ground in Carrington to reduce the risk of infection. Last week 42 Premier League players and staff tested positive. Brighton, Tottenham, Leicester, Aston Villa and Norwich all have confirmed cases, and Sunday’s Brighton-Tottenham match at Spurs was also postponed following a COVID-19 outbreak.

United say the positive cases among staff and players reported on Sunday were confirmed by PCR tests and said the outbreak “requires constant monitoring”. All Manchester United players tested negative ahead of Saturday’s 1-0 win at Norwich, but some tested positive before training on Sunday morning.

“Due to the cancellation of training and the disruption of the team and the prioritizing the health of players and staff, the club sought to reschedule the football match. The Premier League Board has decided to postpone it on the advice of medical advisors,”  United said in a statement.

The league says the match, which was played at 19:30 GMT, will be rescheduled “at the right time”. Brentford apologized to fans for the “interruption”, but “respected” the decision, adding that “the health and safety of players and staff at both clubs should always come first”.

Following the introduction of new rules on the coronavirus in England on Thursday to limit the spread of Omicron, the Premier League asked clubs to return to emergency measures including social distancing and wearing masks. A statement issued by the league on Monday said that the frequency of side flow and PCR tests for players and staff will increase.
