Manchester City joined the race with Barcelona for Lautaro Martinez

After having their European ban lifted for two years, Manchester City officially picked Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez as a possible transfer target.

Pep Guardiola’s side was cleared to play in the Champions League next season after a strong appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the ruling also encouraging them to press ahead with their summer transfer plans.

Since surrendering the Premier League title to Liverpool this season City is set to undergo a significant squad overhaul, as key players such as David Silva, Sergio Aguero, and Fernandinho arrive at the Etihad Stadium towards the end of their careers.

The Daily Mail notes that  Martinez may be a part of the redesign as a long-term replacement for fellow Argentina international Aguero.

This summer the 22-year-old was heavily linked to a move to Barcelona, but president Josep Maria Bartomeu, revealed this week that talks are on hold at present.

Barca is believed to fail to reach the asking price of Inter, with Series A giants refusing to negotiate anything less than its £98.8 m release clause and efforts to strike a player-plus-cash offer so far proving unsuccessful.

This season in all competitions, Martinez has netted 18 goals and created 6 more in 39 appearances.
