In the third round of the Premiership, English champions Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 and thus maintained a 100% performance.
It immediately started fierily. After 2 minutes Sadio Mane was shown a yellow card for slicing down Kieran Tierney. The impression is that Judge Craig Pawson would not have made a mistake even if he had ruled out the Senegalese.
Liverpool had a chance in the 16th minute just over Mane, who was stopped by Bernd Leno, and six minutes later luck saved Arsenal with a shot by Trent Alexander-Arnold who shot from 18 meters. A powerful blow hit Hector Bellerin on the legs and ended up on the beam. Three minutes later a shock at Anfield.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles ran onto a great ball from Andy Robertson, which beat the offside trap, the keeper came rushing out and the lob was attempted, but the lob didn’t succeed.
In the 28th minute, the English champion returns instantly. Leno defended the playful Mohamed Salah shot from the right side after a great break into the penalty area and bounced right on the leg of the running Mane who immediately equalized.
In six minutes, Jurgen Klopp’s team also has the lead. From right to left Alexander-Arnold scored, leaving Robertson alone who scored without a problem for the Reds lead. It was a simple and great combination by the Reds defenders.
Arsenal could equalize in the 63rd minute. Lacazette ruined the equalizer going out on Alisson himself. The Brazilian on Liverpool’s goal showed why he is one of the best in the world.
Arriving from the Wolves for 45 million the Portuguese Diogo Jota made his debut for Liverpool in the 80th minute and three minutes later he had a 3: 1 lead. Salah found it nicely on the left, Jota adjusted and hit the outside of the net. Salah and Jota got entangled in a promising situation in front of Len in the 86th minute, and thus failed to confirm the question of the winner.
In the 88th minute, Jota redeemed himself in his Premiership debut for the Reds. He received the ball on his knee, dropped it on the kick, and pulled into Len’s right corner for 3: 1.
On October 4 Liverpool will play against Birmingham at Aston Villa, and Arsenal will meet Sheffield United on the same day.
