Lionel Messi no longer a Barca player

A bad dream for football fans but unfortunately it’s true. Lionel Messi will no longer be associated with Barcelona. It is confirmed Messi is not staying at Camp Nou, he will leave Barca and this is the bitter truth. Messi and Barcelona fans had not expected this separation, everyone hoped for a new contract. However, the Baluarna legend will not be returning to Barca the club announced on Thursday.

Lionel Messi was a free agent after his contract terminated at the end of the last season – June 30, when he was busy with international games. He was playing for Argentina in the Copa America tournament and won his first international silverware. In recent football news, Barcelona offloaded few players to collect funds to re-sign their superstar but La Liga restrictions and their dire financial situation curbed them to complete a contract.

“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of Spanish LaLiga regulations on player registration,” Barcelona wrote in a statement published on their website.

“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled. FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandizement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life,” the statement added.

Barcelona uploaded a heartwarming video summarizing Messi’s journey at the La Liga giants on their Instagram handle.

Last summer Messi sought to leave Barca as a free agent via a clause in his contract before agreeing to see out the final year as the club threatened to go to court.

Messi joined the Barca youth team at the age of 13 and further continued to be a synonym of Barcelona. He is the club’s all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals in 778 games in all competitions.
