Leeds United has signed Daniel James from Manchester United for an estimated fee of £25 million, more than two years after he joined the England club. The 23-year-old from Wales has signed a five-year contract. Leeds have been following James closely since his desire of leaving Swansea in January 2019, moving to Old Trafford that summer.
Leeds has acquired Daniel James’ signature after they failed to complete a move in January 2019. “For me and my career as a footballer, it’s an absolutely right decision,” James told Sky Sports confirming the transfer news. “I had an incredible time [at Manchester United]. I made great friends, the staff and fans were amazing to me. It’s time for me to move on. I can’t wait.”
“I am a different player. The last time I signed here, I only played half a season. I have games under my belt at the highest level and I think I can add something here,” he added. James scored nine goals in 74 games with the Red Devils, winning 1-0 at Wolves last Sunday.
He faces an uncertain future at Manchester United with his attacking partner Cristiano Ronaldo returning to the club he left in 2009. He has 24 majors for Wales and is part of their squad that will play Finland in an international friendly on Wednesday ahead of the double World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia.
James became Leeds’ eighth signing over the summer transfer window and will wear the number 20 jersey. “The football department has been monitoring Daniels for many years and every member of my team has worked hard to cross that line,” Leeds football director Victor Orta told the club’s website as he spoke on the football news.
“It is no secret that Daniel is a player we have wanted to achieve for many years and today we have reached our goal. As a player, we think Daniil Marcelo is a great fit for the Bielsa team, he is quick, direct and hard-working – we look forward to finally joining the team!”
