Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Villarreal in the Spanish football league La Liga on Saturday, ending the team’s five-match winning streak. This is the first time in all competitions in the current season that Los Blancos has failed to score a goal in a football match. In the first seven matches, the team scored 22 goals, while against them only eight goals.
The team scored 21 goals in the first six matches of the league, its best performance since 1987–88. Madrid’s team has been unbeaten in La Liga for the last 25 matches. Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery drew for the first time across their nine head-to-head career clashes, as two of La Liga’s four unbeaten sides shared the points in a goalless 0-0 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Not overawed by their mighty opponents, Villarreal made sure their presence was felt through Arnaut Danjuma, who forced Thibaut Courtois into a formidable save with a shot from the edge of the box early on.
With Real allowing the visitors to stroll past them on multiple occasions, this was not an isolated incident though. Once again, Paco Alcacer and Danjuma were wasteful failings to convert their chances. However, after the break, Real Madrid renewed his spirits with Eder Militão’s diving header that went wide.
Villarreal themselves came close through two opportunities both denied by Thibaut Courtois. Eventually, neither of the team did enough to break the deadlock. Check out the football highlights of La Liga match in which Real Madrid played a goalless draw with Villarreal. Carlo Ancelotti’s men remain unbeaten with 17 points after 7 La Liga rounds keeping the leadership in the league whereas Emery’s team struggle in the middle of the table securing just one win in their last 5 clashes.
Despite the draw, Real Madrid remain at the top of the table with 17 points, while third-placed Sevilla are three points behind with 14 points, having beaten Espanyol 2-0. Atletico Madrid slipped to fourth place on the points table after suffering a 0-1 defeat against last-place Alavés.
