Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has been informed by the Spanish football club that if he meets certain targets set for him for the rest of the season then they are willing to offer him a new contract next summer. His current contract at Camp Nou is set to expire at the end of the season.
Koeman has long been the subject of speculation about his future, with many speculating that he was brought in as a stop-gap until those in charge at Camp Nou could bring in their preferred target, Al-Sadd boss Xavi. According to Goal’s football news, it has been reported that Barca is very keen to retain Koeman as their manager.
President Joan Laporta has made him a conditional offer of a new contract, which will only become active if the Dutchman meets certain goals this year, both on and off the field. Some of the terms are fairly common. For example, Laporta expects Koeman to remain composed under the pressure of being Barcelona’s manager, and he expects the manager to maintain his cool in front of the media even if rumors about his future circulate.
While adhering to the club’s ‘Cruyffista philosophy,’ there is also pressure on Koeman to continue delivering results but Laporta has also laid out some ground rules for how he must do so. The president wants all performances to resemble the 4-2 win over Real Sociedad on the season’s opening weekend and he also expects Koeman to stick to a 4-3-3 formation.
Furthermore, Koeman has been told that he must give La Masia graduate Riqui Puig a central role in his season plans, demanding that the 22-year-old be given far more minutes than he has seen so far under the Dutchman. Laporta, who recently lost young Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig, appears adamant that he will not lose another academy gem and wants Puig to be promoted to the starting lineup soon.
