Former Paris Saint-Germain and France international midfielder Jerome Rothen thinks it’s Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema who should receive the Ballon d’Or award this year. The last Golden Ball awarded to a Frenchman dates back to 1998. Since Zinedine Zidane lifted it, at the end of a year marked by the coronation of the Blues at the World Cup, the players of France have not plus is one of the winners. Thierry Henry, Franck Ribéry and Antoine Griezmann climbed onto the podium, but failed to win.
According to RMC Sport reports, Jerome Rothen said, “Yes, I do believe Karim Benzema can win it. Some people will talk about trophies. That’s one of the criteria, but there are also individual performances, the player’s class, charisma, and fair play that matter.”
“In terms of class, he has a lot, to say the least. This year, I think, he is the one to show the most elegance and technical skill – did you see his goals in the National League? As far as his performances are concerned, he’s among the best – just look at his stats. All that goes in his favor. He’s been in the fullness of his talent for a few years now, since Cristiano [Ronaldo] left.”
“There are players who won the Ballon d’Or because of their stats. And Cristiano Ronaldo is one of them. He’s been outstanding. As well as Messi, who is very talented and has a lot of class. But these two giants have aged, they’ve been through some difficult times and I don’t think they are in the race for the Ballon d’Or’ anymore. Give it to Karim at last, he deserves it”, – Rothen concluded.
