To kick off Euro 2020 after delayed 12 months, Italy hosts Turkey in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on June 11. Itlay had to wait to make up for a lost time as it missed the last World Cup, but they are now confident going into the regional event.
Scoring 37 goals while allowing just four, under the leadership of Roberto Mancini, the team won ten out of ten qualifiers in their group. The coach has overseen a steady improvement in performances since then.
Turkey lineup: Cakir, Celik, Demiral, Soyuncu, Meras, Yokuslu, Tufan, Calhanoglu, Yazici, Karaman, Yilmaz.
This summer, the Turkey team should be confident in their chances. The Serie A talented duo Hakan Calhanoglu and Merih Demiral are on the team.
Burak Yilmaz and Zeki Celik have come off league-winning seasons with Lille.
Italy lineup: Donnarumma, Chiellini, Spinazzola, Bonucci, Florenzi, Locatelli, Jorginho, Barella, Insigne, Berardi, Immobile.
Marco Verratti missed Italy’s warm-up games as he was recovering from a knee injury suffered more than a month ago. He is unlikely to be fit to start Italy’s first match against Turkey on Friday.
Nicolo Barella and Manuel Locatelli are expected to start as Verratti’s possible absence and Chelsea’s Jorginho is placed in central midfield.
In Italy’s first game Ciro Immobile is expected to start ahead of Andrea Belotti. For the final spot in the front three Federico Chiesa and Domenico Berardi are vying alongside Lorenzo Insigne.
In the last 13 matches, Turkey has lost only once and many people are betting on them to win this summer’s championship, similarly, many people are betting on Italy as well to make a deep run at Euro 2020. Under coach Roberto Mancini the team improved largely.
Since the last European Championships, their roster has grown by leaps and bounds, with star talent in almost every position.
Italy will undoubtedly want to get off to a winning start and will have the better team to do so, while a draw is feasible. Tense situations in opening matches in big tournaments are obvious. Turkey’s defense, which included Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu and Liverpool’s Ozan Kabak, kept eight clean sheets through qualification.
