IM Vijayan: women's football is rising in India

Former Indian football legend IM Vijayan termed the performance of the national women’s football team on the recent tour of Brazil as brilliant. He also said that increasing the competition among the players will help in the development of the game in the country. The Indian team played against Brazil, Chile and Venezuela in a four-nation tournament in preparation for the AFC (Asian Football Federation) Women’s Asian Cup to be held in Mumbai and Pune from January 20 to February 6.

Although the Indian women’s football team lost all its three matches, the highlight of the tour was a goal scored by the team against Brazil, considered the sport’s superpower. Vijayan, former captain of the Indian men’s team, said, “The way India played against Brazil was impressive. We scored a goal against the top team at the world level which shows that the level of women’s football is rising in India.”

In a release issued by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the 52-year-old former player said, “Our team has improved a lot and the federation is also trying its best to give them the much needed experience. India is hosting the Asian Cup next year and everyone is working hard to make it to the team and play good football. I am very happy to see that everyone is contributing towards the development of women’s football to take Indian football forward together.”

India’s international player M Suresh also supported Vijayan’s words. He said, “Indian women’s team is doing well now. The way they performed against the top teams was worth watching. Both the players were present to support the women players on the final day of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship.”

In this tournament, defending champions Manipur clinched their 21st national title by defeating Railways in a penalty shootout in a thrilling final football match on Thursday. Vijayan said, ‘Even after the threat of Covid-19, the way AIFF and the Kerala government have organized the championship, it is commendable. It shows how everyone is working for the development of Indian football.
