The upcoming Hero I-League season will begin on December 26 with a match between NEROCA FC of Manipur and Indian Arrows, a development team of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The matches will be held at three venues – Mohun Bagan Ground, Kalyani Stadium, and Naihati Stadium in Kolkata.
Andhra Pradesh’s Sreenidi Deccan Football Club, Rajasthan United FC, and Kolhapur’s Kenkre FC will see three new teams taking part this season, taking the total team count to 13. Rajasthan United FC and Kenkre FC have qualified for the Hero I-League after finishing first and second in the qualifiers. As per the format of the football tournament, in the first leg, all the teams will play once against each other in a round robin format. After this, in the second phase of the league, they will be divided into two groups.
The top seven teams will qualify for Group A while the bottom six teams will qualify for Group B. Teams from each group will play one match against each other in a round robin format. Teams in Group A will fight for the title, while teams in Group B will battle to avoid slipping into the lower leagues.
