Pep Guardiola cautioned Man City players for off-field behavior

Man City players Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have been cautioned by coach Pep Guardiola about their off-field behavior after being ruled out of Manchester City’s win over Newcastle on Sunday. 21 years old Foden and Grealish who is aged 26, both scored against Leeds on 14 December as Manchester City recorded the biggest win (7-0) of the season.

The England pair were photographed a night after City’s 7-0 home win over Leeds five days earlier. Speaking of a 4-0 win at St James’ Park, Guardiola suggested Foden and Grealish didn’t rest. He said, “I pay close attention to the behavior on and off the field.”

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live he said: “And when it’s not right on the pitch, they won’t play. So you have to stay focused all the time, because the distraction and whatever happens during Christmas – you have to stay focused.”

Man City top the Premier League, and Newcastle United’s win was the 34th league win in 2021 – a new record for the team’s most top wins in a calendar year. It was also the eighth consecutive victory in the championship.

Guardiola said on Sunday: “It was not rotation. I decided on this team because they deserved to play today, these guys and not the other ones. At Christmas time I pay a lot of attention to behaviour on and off the pitch. And when off the pitch is not proper, they are not going to play. So we have to be focused all the time because of distractions at Christmas time and everything that happens – you have to still be focused.”
