Google celebrates the start of Euro 2020 with doodle

The UEFA Euro 2020 tournament begins on Friday 11th June (Saturday for India), with Turkey taking on Italy in a Group A football match at the Stadio Olympico in Rome. Google celebrates the tournament with a doodle, which featured a whistle to mark the start of the Euro 2020. For the first time ever, the tournament takes place in 11 cities in Europe – instead of one or two countries – despite the shadow cast by the COVID-19 pandemic. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal is the champion in action, but world champion France starts the tournament as favorites.

The tournament was postponed for a year due to the coronavirus crisis. But despite the continued threat, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has been optimistic, insisting that Euro 2020 will be safe. “This will be the first global event since the pandemic hit. This would be the perfect opportunity to show the world that Europe is adapting. Europe is alive and celebrating life. Europe is back,” he said.

The most obvious example of this will come from Budapest, where it is expected that the new Puskas Arena will be fully loaded. Each host city will again receive fans, which will have between 25 and 100 percent capacity, except for Munich, which aims to host a minimum of 14,500 fans – about 22 percent capacity.

Dublin and Bilbao were dropped from the list of host cities because they could not guarantee that they could meet UEFA’s requirement to accommodate a limited number of spectators, but Sevilla intervened for Bilbao as Dublin. The games went to London and St. Petersburg.
