French police arrested Aminata Diallo following attack on a teammate Hamraoui

French police on Wednesday arrested Aminata Diallo of the Paris Saint-Germain women’s football team as part of an investigation into an attack on a partner who was pulled over from a car last week and was attacked by masked men. The club confirmed that the arrested player, midfielder Aminata Diallo, was taken into police custody last Thursday during an investigation into an attack on its players.

Diallo, 26, was detained on Wednesday morning, a day after she replaced her injured teammate Kheira Hamraoui in the middle of PSG’s field for the Champions League football match against Real Madrid. Hamraoui, a 31-year-old signed with Barcelona earlier this season, did not play in the game, recovering from injuries to both legs and arms after a post-dinner attack.

While driving, the car was stopped by two men, according to a person familiar with the situation, who confirmed details first published by the sports newspaper L’Equipe. The women were taken out of the vehicle, the person said, and while Diallo was being apprehended by one of the attackers, Hamraoui was attacked.

“Paris Saint-Germain is working with Versailles police to clarify the facts,” the team said in a statement. “The club pays special attention to the development of procedures and will study what measures need to be taken.”

PSG said on Wednesday that it had offered its players extra protection in the days following the attack, an additional layer of security that it regularly arranges for its famous male players. Several PSG players have been robbed in recent years – sometimes when family members are out for matches.

Last Thursday’s attack shook Hamraoui, which left heavy cuts and bruises, but no bones were broken. “Since Thursday evening, the club has taken all necessary measures to guarantee the health, well-being and safety of its entire women’s team”, read a PSG release.
