Frustrated by a last-minute equalizer in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Champions League match against Al-Rayyan, FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando said his team was facing a deadly second wave of the Corona-19 pandemic. Wanted to win this match for the people of India.
FC Goa took the lead in the Group E match here on Monday in the third-minute goal by Jorge Mortiz Mendoza, but in the 89th minute, Ali Farydun’s goal was matched by Qatar’s team Al Rayyan. This shattered Goa’s dream of becoming the first Indian team to win in the AFC Champions League (ACL).
The team has three points from five matches and will play their last match of the group stage against Al Wahda on 30 April. In another league match, Al Wahda beat Persepolis FC 1–0 on Monday, leaving the Indian Super League side out of the race to make it to the knock-out stage of the ACL.
FC Goa coach Juan Ferrando comments on tie with Al-Rayyan
“When you lose (score goals) in the last minute, it is very difficult to digest. But the truth is that we are playing against very strong teams. It is fantastic to play against teams like Persepolis, Al Wahda, and Al-Rayyan,” said Ferrando.
The coach said, “It was a very important match because the situation in India is very difficult at the moment. We were thinking that if we win then it will be a good moment for the people of India because it is a very difficult time for the players. “
He said, “They were talking about playing for India because I know it’s a difficult time. But we missed the chance at the last minute. This is football.”
In the matter of keeping the ball in its possession, the first half was definitely in the name of Al Rayyan but in the second half, the match was equal.
Ferrando said, “Obviously we need to improve, we have to play the next match against Al Wahda. Some of the team’s players are injured and in such a situation, there is a problem in preparing. Medical personnel are working tirelessly. “
“We have to do better to avoid the goal at the last moment. If we compare ourselves with the team we are playing against, it is a big difference. It was a very bad experience for our players at the last minute. He was very tired on the field,” he added.
